Riding The Coattails Of Michael Vick Dog Fighting Publicity And A Nowhere Meeting About Animal Cruelty

A number of years ago a meeting was arranged with the man that had just become the head of a major animal organization. We explained how police were not responding appropriately to calls of animal cruelty, if they were responding at all (with few and rare exceptions, which continues to this day). We explained why animal organizations should not be doing the job of the police, and why their efforts to do so were not only self serving, but were harmful to both people and animals. They also give the police an excuse to continue to do little to nothing.
We were told things would be different, and that he would get get back in touch with us soon.
This was not the only animal organization we had reached out to. Surely, we thought, they would want what is best for animals.
We never heard back from the then new president, who remains at that high paying, lucrative job many years later. He is probably considered a success because of the marketing, money and publicity he has generated. Success for these nonprofits has nothing to do, unfortunately, about efficacy.
Later, the events concerning Michael Vick and dogfighting generated enormous publicity for that organization and others. They were the experts, even though they were not, that could show the world they were on top of the situation. By sending them money, things would be better.
Things will be different, we were told, so many years back. We never heard back, and nothing ever changed for the better.
If a celebrity ever gets arrested for dog fighting again, it will be another windfall for certain animal organizations.
